[EC] Empirical and Theoretical Foundations of European Electricity Markets

Prices, Capacities and Trading Mechanisms

Abstract

This research project contributes to the study of advanced theoretical and quantitative methods for the analysis of the current structure and the future evolution of the major EU electricity markets.

The project is designed along three lines of research: 1) Market Policies: regulation, competition and institutional design; 2) Market Structure: markets architecture and industrial organization; 3) Market Data: econometric analysis of electricity prices and volumes.

This project is expected to provide concrete and innovative solutions for the issues related to the reform of electricity markets, in Italy and in the EU area. Moreover, the results of the project can be useful to promote market liberalization design in the emerging markets. The project will also contribute to the existing methodological literature by proposing new econometric methods and techniques to analyze the statistical properties of electricity time series.
