| Causes and consequences of the European Refugee Crisis |
Abstract:
Recent flows of immigrants and asylum seekers into Europe have created major challenges for policymakers, turning immigration into a highly politicized and polarizing issue across the continent. Understanding the scale, composition, and geographical distribution of migrants is essential for coordinating their allocation and improving multilateral resettlement efforts.
This project seeks to deepen understanding of the recent arrivals and the so-called “European refugee crisis” using new perspectives and original datasets. It will examine how refugee arrivals and dispersal policies affect key local socio-economic outcomes, and how proximity to refugee reception centers shapes individuals’ perceptions and attitudes toward immigrants. This is a joint project with Francesco Campo (University of Padova) and Sara Giunti (University of Pavia).
