Abstract

We will address the question of the real world impact of the EU’s development cooperation and trade policy. The stated aim of the EU is to make a positive contribution to development, the environment, and human rights. But does the EU’s development and trade policy actually contribute to sustainable development in partner countries? Or, could such agreements lead to a crowding out of local firms and inadvertently generate internal political mobilisation, or even political violence? Our key objective is to respond to these questions by analysing what impact the EU’s development cooperation and trade policy have on the economic and social stability of the recipient and partner countries.
